The fresh smell of aromatic cedar brings back fond memories for most of us, whether it be the smell of a cedar chest at a rustic retreat; or a closet lined with aromatic red cedar at home. This aromatic wood is avoided by moths which makes it an excellent wood for clothing chests, wardrobes, and closets.
Also known as Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana), it is actually a conifer (not a hardwood), and is fairly easy to work with using hand or machine tools. It has very tight knots, but the wood can split easily id too much force is used. It holds nails well and has excellent gluing properties. The wood is moderately low in strength and stiffness, but high in shock resistance.
